The Pioneers of the Herleman Cabin in Adams County, Illinois

Author: Steve Brinkoetter
Family Names: Dickhut, Herlemann, Schmitt, Schnellbaecher, Sommermann

Summary: This booklet tells the story of the Herlemann families who built and resided in the log cabin that is now located on Quinsippi Island. In addition to being a family history, this story is also significant since this Herlemann family in 1834 began a migration chain of friends, family and neighbors that accounts for about 8% of the early German immigrants to Adams County. This migration chain suggests that there was something pretty special about Adams County at that time, since these folks didn't end up here by chance but deliberately choose this corner of America as where they would stake their future. In addition to its immigration insights, this booklet also provides insights into the life of the last person to live in this cabin-William Herleman-whose pet snake, practical jokes, whiskey still, and horse racetrack provides an interesting glimpse into rural Adams County life in the 1920s.
