Background on James H. Stilwell;

James H. Stilwell was a river boat captain/owner on the Ohio, Illinois, and Mississippi rivers. He was also a superintendent on the Illinois river after the blockade of the Mississippi during the Civil war.

He made his home in Pearl Township of Pikes County, Illinois. My records indicate he purchased 300+ acres in the fall of 1857. By the time of his death he owned a total of 480 acres in Pearl Township and a like amount in Ripley or Ripler County Missouri.

My information was supposedly taken from the old history of Pike County and that is all the information I can provide about where it came from.

I sincerely hope that this information will help in your search. I had requested information about James H. Stilwell's grandchildren, due to a missing link between my paternal great grandfather and my great-great grandfather. My great grandfather is one of James H. Stilwell's children. If in your search you find listings for the children of any of James H. Stilwell's children (grandchildren) I would be eternally grateful if you would include it along with that of James H. Stilwell.
