Howey (Howie) Family

I'm interested in gathering information on the Howey (Howie) family in the Pittsfield area. In my search I've discovered an interesting story of James M. Howey, he was known to be living in or around Pearl in probably the last quarter of the 1800s. The story goes something like this: James, living in Pike Co., had to return to Ireland to settle an estate. Upon return to Pike Co. he found his wife had left him. Shortly thereafter he became dispondent, became a hermit and died. Years later (1920s) men digging in the area unearthed a stash of gold coins. These coins were believed to have been buried by James Howey - the settlement of the estate in Ireland. Supposedly this story was printed in a newspaper in the 20s. Anyone familiar with this story and could provide me with the real details? Thanks.
